Preventing Mold in Your Home
Moisture can build up quickly in homes, especially during the colder months. If it isn’t properly removed, mold can form. Rooms or areas where moist air comes into contact with cold surfaces are particularly at risk.
Where mold often grows
Mold often forms:
- on exterior walls
- in the corners of rooms
- behind large pieces of furniture
- all about windows
- in the bathroom
- in the bedroom
Especially in places where air doesn't circulate well.
Do not place furniture directly against exterior walls
Large pieces of furniture should not be placed directly against cold exterior walls if possible. Leaving a small gap allows air to circulate more freely behind cabinets or sofas, helping moisture to dry more quickly.
Heat rooms as evenly as possible
Rooms that are left to cool down significantly increase the risk of moisture and mold growth. Therefore, even rooms that are rarely used should not be allowed to cool down completely.
The following guidelines apply:
- Living areas: about 20 °C
- Kitchen: about 18 °C
- Bedroom: about 17 °C
Remove moisture quickly
Fogged-up windows or damp surfaces should be wiped dry as soon as possible. After showering, bathing, or cooking, it is recommended that you ventilate the room immediately.
Open the windows for a few minutes several times a day
- Open the windows all the way several times a day
- Open windows that are as far apart as possible at the same time
- In winter, 5 to 10 minutes is usually enough
- In the summer, you can air out the room for longer
- Turn down the heat while ventilating
Windows that are left tilted open are less effective and can waste heating energy.
Act early
Early signs of moisture or mold may include:
- musty smell
- dark spots on walls
