Everything You Need to Know About Finding an Apartment

First, register as a prospective tenant using the online form on our website. As soon as a suitable apartment becomes available, we will send you an email with an offer. If you are interested, you can schedule a viewing with the agent listed in the email and discuss all further steps in person.

No, there is no waiting list for apartments at WGL. Whether and how quickly you receive an offer does not depend on how long you have been registered with WGL as a prospective tenant, but rather on how well a newly available apartment matches the criteria you have specified. To increase your chances of receiving an apartment offer, we recommend being as flexible as possible with your search criteria (e.g., neighborhoods, size).

If you haven’t received an apartment offer yet, it may be because none of our currently available apartments match your criteria. It might be helpful to update the form you filled out initially to increase your chances of receiving an offer.

If the previous tenant recommends you as the next tenant when giving notice, you generally have the option of renting the apartment in question. However, such a recommendation is not a binding commitment and does not guarantee that a lease will be signed.

You do not need to submit any documents in advance. However, it is important that you provide all the search criteria (e.g., obtaining a housing eligibility certificate).

Yes. Once you receive an apartment listing via email, you can schedule a viewing.

About the rental

If you have viewed the apartment and are still interested, we will check your credit report and will need your last three pay stubs. We will also need your bank account information if you would like your rent to be automatically debited.

If you receive government assistance and your rent is paid by the City of Leverkusen or the Employment Office, you must obtain approval from the relevant agency before renting the property.

Once all the necessary steps have been completed and the lease has been signed, an appointment can be scheduled for the apartment handover on the lease start date. During the handover, the condition of the apartment as agreed upon in the lease and the meter readings will be documented. You will then receive the keys to the apartment.

If you wish to take over any items from the previous tenant, we require a written declaration of assumption of responsibility, signed by both the previous tenant and you, to be submitted to the relevant housing administration office.

In general, there is no obligation to take over any items or cosmetic repairs from the previous tenant.

We also rent out underground parking garages and parking spaces. If you are interested, simply send the completed application form for an underground parking garage or parking space to your housing management representative.

Housing assistance is a government subsidy for rent that helps low-income individuals cover their housing costs. Whether you are eligible for housing assistance and the amount you receive depend on the number of household members, your total income, and the amount of your rent.

There are two ways to apply for housing assistance: either online through the NRW Municipal Portal, or in person or by mail at the Leverkusen City Social Services Office.
