Commitment to Leverkusen
New PV Tenant Electricity Project by WGL and EVL
Energieversorgung Leverkusen (EVL) and WGL are continuing to promote tenant-generated electricity and the expansion of solar power in Leverkusen: In September, the two municipal subsidiaries commissioned a solar power system at Königsberger Platz. Approximately 200 solar panels on three roofs generate climate-friendly solar power.
The electricity generated on-site can be used by the residents of the 72 residential units and by the commercial units on the ground floor without being fed into the grid.
“Our tenants now have the option, when choosing an electricity plan, to purchase locally generated green electricity on favorable terms. This innovative model is intended to be implemented in all new construction projects and in energy-efficiency retrofits of existing buildings in the future, ”says the authorized signatory and head of portfolio management at WGL.
The model also offers advantages for tenants: If they wish, they can purchase locally produced green electricity and benefit from renewable energy subsidies through the EEG tenant electricity surcharge. Interested parties can use the rate advisor on the EVL website to check whether a tenant electricity contract is available for their building.
WGL and EVL have been collaborating on photovoltaics for several years now:
There are now 45 solar power systems generating climate-neutral electricity on a total of 114 buildings. At Königsberger Platz, the two companies are implementing a lease-back model for the first time: WGL remains the owner of the system, while EVL operates it and markets the locally generated electricity.
