Proper Ventilation and Heating

How to maintain a healthy indoor environment: Proper ventilation and heating are especially important during the cold season. This helps prevent moisture buildup in your home, stops mold from growing, and ensures a comfortable indoor environment.

The right room temperatures

Rooms that are too cold can lead to moisture buildup and mold growth.

The following guidelines apply:

  • Living areas: about 20 °C
  • Kitchen: about 18 °C
  • Bedroom: about 17 °C

The temperature can be lowered at night or when you are away for a short time. However, rooms should not cool down completely.

Keep radiators clear

To ensure that the heat is distributed evenly throughout the room:

  • Do not block radiators with furniture
  • Do not hang curtains in front of radiators
  • Keep thermostats easily accessible

Open the windows for a few minutes several times a day

Regularly opening windows wide to let in fresh air helps remove moisture from your home.

  • Open the windows all the way several times a day
  • Open windows that are as far apart as possible at the same time
  • In winter, 5 to 10 minutes is usually enough
  • In the summer, you can air out the room for longer
  • Turn down the heat while ventilating

Windows that are left tilted open are less effective and can waste heating energy.

Ventilate immediately if moisture builds up

A lot of moisture builds up in the home during everyday life, for example:

  • while showering
  • while cooking
  • while drying laundry

That is why you should ventilate the rooms immediately afterward to prevent moisture from building up.

Place furniture away from exterior walls

Large pieces of furniture should not be placed directly against cold exterior walls if possible. Leaving a small gap allows air to circulate more freely behind cabinets and sofas.

Report any concerns promptly

Foggy windows, damp spots, or a musty odor can be early signs of excessive moisture.
